A Get-together

This episode of “Her Face” series takes place in a private kitchen. Natali Seelig, with Chinese heritage, who works professionally as an actor in the ensemble of Deutsches Theater Berlin, is invited with her siblings for a get-together, that takes place in a kitchen on the first Sunday of 2023. The kitchen will play a kitchen, decorated after the host's fantasy of Hong Kong or Bali. A capable cook is invited to play a cook. The transitions and paths that connect the biographical locations will, however, become temporarily visible - the paths that stretch on this continent from different directions and paths of diasporic movements.

Where stands the source? Hong Kong? Indonesia? Up towards the source, we encounter childhood memories, where the great grandparents and grandparents were active… the genesis of a migrational myth, a family clan, moving and building, noticing the conceptual paradigm of languages and nations. All these symphonic movements give shape to many faces, of them, of us, of my mother, of her father, of someone’s siblings …they give shape to the memories moving from one place to another.

It is a common experience for everyone who has left home, to hear noises of memories echoing in the middle of the night, inside the blood vessels deeper than one’s ears, between consciousness and sleep, as if the voices would not stop. Perhaps it reminds of a grain of sand in a moving dune, a dune that has been moving for centuries. The poetry in the historical reality of an invisible diasporic movement. A person is then placed in a far-away land, in a city or another town, remembered and called as Berlin or another name. The programmed lights on the theater stage shine on the numerous characters of an inexhaustible repertoire. One becomes anonymous. The drama stored in oneself fuels the eternal dramaturgy. A Sunday brunch is planned, where everyone joins in collecting fragments of memories, asking questions, thinking and searching, discussing about our families. ‘Why do we stay in a place? Why do we stay with someone? Why do we move on?’

At the Sunday brunch, the Seelig siblings will be simply present, quietly diving into the family myths and the stories. The memories might converse, or para-verse, multi-verse. Grandma’s cooking. The tropical. Ethical minority. Christian mission and medical aid. Cantonese food. Neighbourhood backstreets… will gustatory memories wake up?

What is also interesting is that Natali drew from the Opaque Text Box of “Her Face” Text Nr. 5 from the then translator and sinologue Susanne Göße as well as Text Nr. 3 Paul Celan’s Niemandsrose, a rose that repeatedly blooms in different private apartments, with Sasha of Kiev (Ep.2), with the sustainability advocate (Ep.3), and now with diasporic memories… the rose that again shine on an imagined road of exile. That Niemand whispers: only in the fugitive diaspora can poētēs(ποιητής) be.

about collaborating artists

Ophelia, Lam Suet Chi has received a BFA in Visual Arts (HKBU) and another BFA in Set and Costume Design (HKAPA).  She continued her Scenography and Costume Design studies at Kunsthochschule Weißensee in Berlin. She is an interdisciplinary artist, costume designer, and scenographer focusing on conceptual, site-specific, and participatory theatre projects. She believes that art helps us to perceive the world, whether as viewers or as participators. It reveals the invisible and gives shape to the intangible. These principles are driven not by a self-indulgent romance of art, but by a belief that art can be socially relevant. Art provides a language to render social issues alive and awakens the public so that the wider public can be engaged.
