Peacock's Lungs

‘We are all in the habit of expressing our feelings and opinions in deviant ways, and we are quick to mistake them for reality itself’ - Alain de Botton.

Meike Rötzer, who hosts Episode Seven of "Her Face“, was a stage actress, later she worked in television, then as an editor in a publishing house. Now, after a few shifts, she has been building her audiobook career. In the changing and interweaving of different jobs, identities and career paths, what is casted on the page is the doubles and reflections of life decisions that mirror each other, that deviate from one another.  How can one tell the doubles from realities? When no answer can be found, would we simply fall in love with the ‘deviated’? Visually and acoustically formed theatre performance morphed to silent but graphed text lines, which then morphed to the pure wavelength of voice, echoing, evoking, in the landscape of mnemosyne.

The inspiring Narrative for Episode Seven is one about a fire. A late night fire took all Meike's books. The integral world composed of life stories, knowledge and memories disappeared in the corpse of the books. ‘The images disappeared, soon forgotten. What is the value of ideas? Paper is paper and a book a book. Is a burnt Bible more valuable than a comic book?’ Meike Rötzer since then instead ‘strives to make language her own, not in a book, but to restore language to a diffusing magnetic field', unprintable, thus unignitable.

Documentary materials enhance Meike's storytelling, such as police reports, insurance forms and news cutouts. These cold factual texts resemble the architectural structure laid bare by fire, as well the structure of the official questioning. When the structure and the questions are again picked up, jumping and flickering as if the doubles of memories - in the two study rooms parallel to one another in Meike's apartment, picked up and voiced out by the sororal duo of Meike Rötzer and Maren Schlüter, they turn lively and vivid. ‘The lamp the lamp the lamp, the more he asks, the brighter I see it shining. Did I leave it on? The lamp. The more I think the word, the more smoothly it bends, becomes rubber, melts like the washing machine. Yes, it was the lamp, yes, I left it on.’

This is Episode Seven of "Her Face” series, where Susanne Göße's text on the Chinese poet Zhang Zao is reloaded in Meike's records and documents in analogy to the performative double, ‘My strange lungs, like spreading peacocks. They change their radiance as they please. Unregulated. Immeasurable. The constellation of peacock cannot be seen from Europe. The constellation of peacock lies at the edge of the south. Like the poet at the edge of the world. But it remains through the ages.’
